Ann is right about the intimidation factor on the part of law enforcement being so necessary...when it's 3AM and you make that 911 call because you're having trouble in your life, what you want is a cop sized like a linebacker who fills the doorway and is carrying a big shotgun. That's what you want as a crime victim and that's what the public needs when the cops are out taking down noncompliant criminals. The average street thug is just going to laugh at a petite female cop or an alphabet/diversity hire who speaks/acts like Richard Simmons. So much of police work is psychological and street trash will simply not respect anything other than a big MAN with a weightlifter's arms. Anything less than that will cause the interaction to rapidly escalate, and when a female cop thinks that she's about to be overpowered she has few options other than drawing her service pistol.

As is frequently the case, what Ann says isn't politically correct, but reality doesn't care about political correctness. The reality of the streets is that the trash will respond to physical size, meaningful language and the obvious ability to easily and instantly knock them into the next county with their fists...that's it.

Sloat and the sycophant Wyze (well, most of us are sycophants or we wouldn’t be here) make good points.

I was a cop. I like to think a very good one because I gave it 150% at the expense of the rest of my life. I do regret that now, particularly not having children or keeping a healthy relationship.

Recognized as cop-of-the year by my department, the largest in my state, numerous commendations and I was involved in four shootings and was cleared in all. The shootings were more a result of high profile assignments (housing projects and fugitives), including a lengthy tenure in narcotics.

I lay out the above to give credibility to Ann. Most cops are not racists. Btw, I worked with multiple agencies and two task forces. Did I ever run into someone I suspected of being one? Yes, but a minuscule number. But, never, not once, did I ever see those cops, or any other, commit civil rights violations based on race, not once.

Not painting a picture of angels, but cops are not properly critiqued today. I had my fair share of IA investigations from civilian complaints, none resulted in discipline and most were for language.

Language is part of the command presence mode for those resisting arrest or for those you don’t want to arrest. So, the f word is a frequent flyer.

Regarding women, I don’t believe they are effective for patrol duties. But, I ran across many men this applies to. There are plenty of male cops, but not as a starting premise, who should not be in law enforcement.

Are women smart? Yes. Are some brave? Yes. Do some perform well in investigations? Yes. But, you walk before you run. You are not as effective if you don’t have a base of street knowledge and only deal with the surface facts.

But, a criminal doesn’t give a fuck about woke policies. Not in his DNA. He WILL take advantage, so women are more at risk and create circumstances for a higher use of any physical force and the attending complaints and civilian review.

On a internal note, the good looking female cops are disruptive because cops are dogs and macho and that dynamic is not helpful in the practical application of work. Second, many get preferential treatment when they should not. Third, and related to the first, cover cars tend to show up on calls assigned to females, creating a void in other patrol sectors.

Fourth, I made my bones creating a stable of informants. This came through arrests, not making arrests when I could have, being in a position to do both, which had physical risks (I went to the ER more times than I sent people to the ER), having a relationship with prosecutors because of the former (includes finding witnesses and perps as special requests and then securing leniency for informants (signed or informal) when appropriate to use to advance investigations) and, lastly, having relationships with outside agencies when they were looking for someone or just to tap my knowledge. I did get my kicks from receiving calls from some pretty hardened criminals, just because I gave them a modicum of human respect out of the public eye. Always aware motive was suspect, but communication remained open. Being a dick to all was not the way to work and I was really competent at sizing people up, especially in the box conducting interviews and interrogations.

Promotional exams have a written component and an oral board interview. Women have a leg up because of woke policies and because beauty is a factor with success, but it has zero to do with police work. I was promoted both times I went through the process, but I had to play the game and lie to the oral boards even when the gender questions were tossed at me. I stopped taking exams, because each, including my entry, were the subject of affirmative action lawsuits in Fed Court. I wanted to keep my special investigative plainclothes autonomy, which I would have lost to a third promotion and I didn’t want to spend any more money on litigation. I witnessed four women fail the entry physical exam, but somehow entered the academy anyway. Two were superior in rank when I left and that does not engender respect.

I normally flip my Substack comments over to Twitter, and although, I’ve supported Ann with Twitter posts regarding female cops, because this is not her first revelation, I will refrain. Most male cops, especially current ones, will not voice opposition to “ponytails.” There is nothing to gain, only to lose, in telling the truth. And there are some good female cops, but they are the exception. We don’t live in a world of exception, we live in a world of conformity, perception - success be damned.

A good male cop can do anything a female cop can do, but not necessarily the reverse, and this includes sexual assault interviews. I’ll never forget my first ER gurney post-assault victim interview as a detective. I believe she felt the strength my partner and I exuded.

I’m really not a misogynist, just a pragmatist and all of my commentary is not borne of academic tinge. Strictly actual real world experience.

Ann, excellent commentary. I hope you do more like this. I am inside this business (but not law enforcement) and I can tell you that the reason cities make absurdly large financial settlements is because they -- very rightly -- fear getting even larger and more absurd awards by Floyd fans and woke idiot jurors -- like some of the commenters here - who can't wait to demonstrate their "virtue".

I was involved in an "unarmed" black man officer-involved shooting case in which the bad guy's mother got her ex-con son a pistol, rented him a car and sent him out to finally do something positive (for her).

Any real examination of these police shootings will show that if the suspect did not resist, he would not have been shot, etc. No resistance = no shooting.

"Unarmed Black man, what they mean is, he dropped his firearm seconds earlier."

The advantage the bad guys will always have over liberal DAs, mayors, and governors: the bad guys don't have to worry about politics.

Ann... you may want to dish out a few less bullseyes in your next post>

You're obliterating the enemy... there'll be nothing left. (I wish)

Uvalde Texas cops are disgusting. They stood in hallway doing nothing for an hour while children were shot, screamed and over the hour they bled to death. Governor Abbott was proud of these unprofessional low life non-cops. Can you imagine being armed, children are shot and killed and you can hear them scream and Uvalde cops sit there with their finger somewhere but on a trigger.

Swear words by police are unprofessional. It shows stupidity not macho.

How about the woman officer who mistook her gun for a taser and shot and killed the driver She was as aggressive as a male police officer. So aggressive officers do stupid things, both male and female police. Do you agree the city should pay the estate for the drivers death? What do you think about the civil rights violation and settlement payment?

Girl cops should be limited in the same way front line military assignments are restricted. Make women K9 officers, intel, plainclothes whatever. But to put them on the street with violent offenders is ridiculous.

I love how it's liberals themselves who keep telling everyone not to trust the police. "Whatever you say", I reply, shoving my pistol into my shoulder holster.

Ok one thing - I can't remember even one time a cop made me drive to the station for an expired registration and I'm always late getting mine renewed. So exactly how expired were this Yale professor's tags?
