You have to admit that the mania exhibited by certain power groups in certain areas of the country more closely follow those described in The Madness of Crowds. In the case of trans mania, we're looking at rich, affluent whites on the east and west coasts. Very little of this is happening in poor neighborhoods, the Midwest, or in minority neighborhoods.
In terms of mental illness, it most closely resembles Munchausen's Syndrome (for the afflicted) and Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy (for their parents), and a big part of this is the effort to draw attention to yourself or your child as "special" or "different".
Some of the participants could have possibly received too little testosterone in the womb, or received it too late. There were more cases of this back in the '30s and earlier, when untrained doctors delivered at home and mistook a very enlarged clitoris for a micropenis, or a very small micropenis as a clitoris (yes, it happened). The child was then raised as a girl instead of a boy, or visa versa, until puberty. When the secondary sex characteristics kicked in, usually the medical community suppressed the changes with hormones.
I don't think we have as much of a problem with this misdiagnosis as we had 90 years ago, but again, I think this type of sexual dysphoria is rare. Children are very open to suggestion and pleasing their parents early on is very important. "Mom says I'm a girl, so I must be a girl."
It's not much to go on, but the power of suggestion at that point in your life is enormous. We may just be looking a group of attention-seeking adults who want to mischaracterize their children for the exploitation factor.
