We can thank George Bush for DHS and TSA. Well, the 15 intelligence agencies failed so...let's create another one. Govt logic for you. And Bush then appointed chief spook Tom Ridge, whose only accomplishment was to order PA state cops not to go after Kermit Goznell. The more I reflect on George Bush, the more buyer's remorse I get.
Exactly! In fact, Bush could use the situation to build the wall and shut down Third World mass migration, instead he gave Democrats everything they wanted, from total surveillance over our communications to completely redundant, unionized department. As result, thanks to the explosion of unionized federal workers, Virginia switched from Red to Blue.
my vague recollection is that TSA was originally envisioned as private security hired by airlines. Also, my vague recollection is that Teddy Kennedy, when sobered up and informed of the idea, hit the ceiling and demanded that the entire operation had to be done by union government employees.
Every law or program T Kennedy ever touched should be rescinded.
Off topic but my suggestion for DOGE is to relocate all Cabinet departments to various cities in flyover country, preferably in solidly red states. Just guessing but I’d bet half of Commerce employees would voluntarily retire rather than move to Des Moines.
Maybe we’d have to let State stay behind to deal with embassies and such. Getting a bunch of federal workers and their hangers-on out of Virginia would also have the benefit of turning the state solidly red.
Lest anyone forget CIA director under Trump was one Gina Haspel who was also CIA station chief in London when Trump was running in 2015. She was in on the setup. She knew everything, the whole operation started in London with the attempted setup of George Papadoplos. She was John Brennan’s babe in London. This slime ball was in on it from the start. John Brennan was CIA director under Obama, Haspel station chief in London. After Trump’s election in ‘16 she made her way back to DC becoming the deputy CIA director under , yes Mike Pompeo, then elevated to director after Pompeo left. The CIA was and is as corrupt as the FBI. Pompeo and Haspel at the CIA under Trump. Tell me they didn’t work to undermine Trump.
I could write volumes on the abomination that is TSA. I was one of the FAA employees given the choice between unemployment or moving to TSA. In retrospect unemployment would have afforded more opportunities for self respect. Luckily I was involved with the regulatory side of things and didn't spend my days providing "intimate human contact", as Ms. Coulter so aptly put it. I remember when President Bush II put out the call to staff the new Agency. He asked that the other Agencies/Departments send their "Best & Brightest" to fill the management structure of TSA. Other Agencies/Departments sent people by the truckloads. They were all of the people they had wanted to be rid of for years and couldn't fire because they were Federal Employees. These people never had to carve out time from their schedules to attend MENSA meetings. The "Best & Brightest* hired others exactly like them. A great book by Robert I. Sutton PhD explains how this works. The chain of hiring mentally defective egomaniacs will never be broken. TSA cannot be fixed. I retired as soon as I was able. There was never any doubt that TSA is nothing but Security Theater.
Great analysis. Somebody I know saw the offloading first hand as well. And as a scientific study of incompetent people once concluded the incompetent are blissfully self assured, not having the insight to recognize the incompetence obvious to everyone else. And yes indeed people hire people much like themselves thus extending the streak.
I hope Elon Musk introduces artificial intelligence to the federal government which should be a demonstrable upgrade to the numbskulls working in the federal bureaucracy.
I flew to ATL on a commercial airline and, upon opening my shaving kit, found a really nice pocket knife that I forgot was in there. It cost over $100, so I was glad TSA never found it. I mailed it home in case my return trip was not so lucky.
Ann thank you for the laughs. People until recently would still bring the kids to the circus. But why? Well we just always did. "Take your shoes off and get grandma off the wheel chair, Suzy needs to 'pat' her down". So the cockpit is locked and I would be the idiot saying "Lets roll !". I find myself eyeing people in the boarding area and as I go down the aisle to squeeze into my freekin kid size seat. I feel better when I see a guy a few rows up in Army fatigues and know I have a partner if the shit hits the fan. I worry more now about the DEI/DIE pilot putting seat hours in to get their Captain's license. The CIA has the same problem as any other government organization, incompetence that's from poor leadership. "I'm from the government and I'm here to help." The federal budget is $7 Trillion with revenue of $5 Tril, $2 Tril of debt. 1% of 7T is $70 Billion and that's a lot to skim off the top. But what if it's 7, 8, or 10%? Elon has 3 or 4 months to get an idea of how big the grift is before the money gets laundered away into some offshore account. He's going after the low hanging fruit, and soon will be chopping on the big branches of the 3 letter agencies. Have a little patience. This could be the biggest heist in history, and if it is, Elon and the boys are in a lot of danger. Say a prayer. Peace Out !!
Concerning the TSA, has there ever been a wider gulf between the alleged importance of an agency's mission and the quality of the individuals tasked with achieving it? Talk about a genetic dunghill. "I'd grope ya but my hands are still greasy from lunch."
My dad worked with the CIA as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam. They are the only people I ever heard him describe as evil.
On October 2, 2023, Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that they had de-escalated crises in Gaza, and the Middle East in general was quieter than it had been in two decades. Five days later we all learned otherwise. With 'intelligence' like this, I'll consult my Magic 8 Ball instead.
TSA is a pestilence and they always seem to enjoy themselves a tad too much when I get the “enhanced” treatment to the extent that I have once asked an “officer” if they was enjoying themself.
No matter how bad Biden was, just mention TSA and /or the Patriot Act and some parody comes into focus with that jackass in an elephant costume George W Bush and his Deputy Führer Dick…father of the she-wolf of the SS Liz.
In 1989ish I was considering joining the SUNY Binghamton College Republicans. At the time, the CIA was recruiting on campus and the lefties were protesting. The college Rs wanted to hold a counter protest in support of the CIA. I asked, "what are you going to put on your signs 'We don't know what you guys are up to but we support you?'" They didn't do the counterprotest, and I went my own way and didn't join. Still proud of that one!
As far as TSA goes, I once stopped a swarthy looking fellow (not a native English speaker this fellow) who was heading through screen even though he wasn't waved through by security. All I said to him was, "they didn't wave you through." One of the TSA guys waves him through and decides I should get some extra screening and await a supervisor. It ended when I told the supervisor what happened. It reminded me though of what my dad (NYPD 1966-86) said about mall security and other "rubber guns" and how power went to their heads...
Thank you Ann. There are no easy answers on this one. Appreciated the link to View From the Wing article. Interesting statistics about TSA effectiveness/ineffectiveness.
If I might, a suggestion about the Derek Chauvin case. It is much bigger story than Musk or Shapiro know. The missing piece is Dr. Roger Mitchell, the black activist DC medical examiner who not only corrupted Floyd's autopsy, but he also suppressed Brian Sicknick's autopsy report.

But didn't Ridge come up with that clever color-coded terror alert system? Wonder why it wasn't used for Covid--Condition Red forever!

“TSA. Mostly a full employment program for "body positive" gals who didn't work out at Target…”
Excellent description of what it is.
Get rid of it.

Excellent idea Tony. Decentralize the swamp!

The folks who sell bottles of water for $7 at the airport have the world's bests lobbyists.
