The Grey Lady is, in reality, The Hysterical Marxist Child.
"The paper says their decision to publish the piece led to a 'review' of its editing process, adding that it 'concluded that the essay fell short of our standards and should not have been published.'"
TRANSLATION: "Cotton's Essay was not vetted through the paper's political oversight before publication, which triggered a religious upheaval among core staff. The paper will redouble its dedication to launder every phrase, every word, every letter through its established hard-Left spin cycle in order to regain credibility among its low-IQ,, fully-indoctrinated and highly cloistered readership."
The NYT has had zero credibility as a legitimate, trustworthy news source for decades...or more...among thoughtful readers and can only redeem itself through a thorough housecleaning and a fully public address of its numerous failures in the most basic elements of journalistic integrity.
Until this happens, it will continue to dwindle in readership into the realm of a worldwide laughingstock.
Sadly, I see no effort by the NYT to even acknowledge these issues much less address them.
I pick up a copy of the N.Y. Times once in a while (only when I'm feeling masochistic) and the propaganda is non stop. I can barely get through a paragraph in any story without calling BS on every single sentence. Yesterday's opinion page had a guy named David French: 'The U.S. can't go wobbly on Ukraine.' It was all the usual hysteria about how Putin is Dr. Evil incarnate and must be stopped by going to DEFCON 1! The gist of it was the absolute whopper that the Ukraine war is winnable. No, it's certainly not now and never was. Half of the Ukraine army is already dead and four more tanks (down from 88) are not going to save the other half. Here is Biden in Kiev telling Zelensky that we need to see some victories now fella, or future support may be harder to come by.
All true, and sadly so. It could have been such a great newspaper, worthy of respect throughout the world, if they had only resisted the temptations to leave all principles of professional journalistic conduct by the wayside and fully embrace the extreme Left...and all the assorted sicknesses that come along with that. Truly a missed opportunity on the one hand, but I would suggest that on they other their open and proud lack of professional ethics have inspired many to be the precise opposite. Sometimes it is from an overwhelming Darkness that some are inspired to bring Light.
I’m curious: why should the Times change? It’s making money, has tremendous influence on politics and the culture, and is on the side that is winning.
Is that failing? If it is I’d hate to see what winning looks like.
Believing that the Times is going to fail or become a laughingstock among thoughtful readers seems to me to be the kind of cope that conservatives have been consoling themselves with for almost 50 years.
Meanwhile the left keeps pulling on their end of the rope, and the right keep holding onto their opposite end -- while they slide deeper and deeper into the Big Muddy.
Yes, you're absolutely right. That's why the current contretemps is so interesting. It seems to be exposing the rage of the real journalists against the D.I.E. bureaucracy brought in to annoy everyone. I hope the real journalists win.
Making money? Not according to the far-Left Vanity Fair:
"When evaluating these strategies, it’s worth remembering how much smaller the Times is as a business than it used to be. According to a Times spokeswoman, in 2014 the New York Times Media Group generated just over half the advertising revenue it did in 2002. The organization now generates more revenue from its subscribers than its advertisers."
That being said, the NYT will most likely never change because they don't 'have' to.
There will always be a small, dedicated, religious following of The Times, easily enough to support their dwindling staff and press operators.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world...the part that cares about truth and journalist ethics...will move on to more honest and less ideologically-driven news sources.
Trump brought them back to profitability, ironically. There are a lot of liberals (probably long-haul covid sufferers), who CANNOT GET ENOUGH trump bashing. You all saw it, you don't need me to remind you.
But what happens when he's really and truly gone, done, irrelevant? Will the NYT, etc. keep reporting what a douche he is from the nursing home? Have 20-year Stormy Daniels anniversaries?
They may have to hire back the real journalists and can the D.I.E. pests without Trump to keep them alive.
Thank you Ann so very much for your reply and your correction. It's amazing that the NYT had such a massive turnaround from the spot at Death's Door that they were occupying prior to Trump. The Left's visceral, seething hate is truly breathtaking at times.
I'm guessing that after Trump is 'truly' gone, the shift will be to the media perpetually attributing every conceivable ill afflicting America to Trump policies...setting him up as an Everlasting Boogeyman so as to dissuade any future politicians from embracing any even vaguely-Trumpian policies. He will live forever as the Left's go-to Devil and they will twist anything and everything into "well, it was Trump's policies that set the stage for this horrible situation..."
Finding more accurate, more honest and more professional news sources is hardly "running away." It's more like "becoming a better-informed person." It's merely allowing the free market to work its magic.
It doesn't matter whether the NYT collapses or not, as long as there are better options available for more thoughtful people. Thankfully, there are several better options and there always will be as long as there's still some minimal level of freedom in the world.
Thank you Ann for follow up on the US health care system, and the continuation of being-held hostage—fentanyl and drug trafficking, the psychological seize of a pre-pubescent child, elder care. Disclaimer: Personal-held-belief is the pre-teen gender re affirmation movement is a form of child abuse. In addition, many countries do not have the race and race baiting problem the US continues to endure. Must be adept, astute and able to read between the lines. Thank you again.
I live in Northern Virginia, so I read the Washington Post. But it's exactly the same thing as the NYT. Every story is just blackity-black. It's almost comedic
The alumni should beg, borrow or contribute to a fund to pay the superintendent off in return for his resignation. Is your heritage and your posterity worth, say, $10 million? Then force the Board to hire a white man who isn’t concerned in the least about being called racist.
This is the same Tom Cotton that joined the unholy 18 Rino Senators that vote for the trillion-dollar disastrous Biden Bill! Some of us will never forget they all got their thirty pieces of silver!
I won't repeat myself about "advocacy journalism" and the death of attempts at objectivity. For this one I will go low...what a bunch of whiny losers! Who sadly, as many here note, are not actually losing.
There's no doubt in my mind that print is going away. Not only are the major cities looking at one or two papers, when there used to be 5, but now even the single paper a smaller city was dependent on has disappeared.
In the meantime, the neo-Marxist tribalism that defines our national discourse is intensifying the clout of the Crazies, and the 6 or 7 Leftist sources (along with the 3 or 4 Right Wing sources) are crushing internal dissent down into a Black Hole of information, where the Truth goes in, never to re-emerge.
Is it possible to listen to the "other" side without becoming hysterical and issuing fatwas on the heretics? No, we're probably past that point. So the demise of print journalism accelerates under the gravity of the true believers who never question their judgement and would never entertain alternatives.
But I'm sure no one at the Times had any complaint about Tom Cotton being in the bipartisan chorus that called for "killing" the Nord Stream pipeline: "Kill Nord Stream 2 now and let it rust beneath the waves of the Baltic" (because defending Biden's Ukraine donors is worth nuclear war).
I got excited that the Krakauer was the Into Thin Air author but that was Jon. Needless to say kudos to him for exposing the truth. And yes I remember this incident. Too bad the National Guard wasn’t summoned before Trump’s speech to guard the Capital Jan 6.

We'll fight to the last dead Ukrainian!

Because the NYT is not the only game in town.

Yes it is. But is it influential?
If you went on the Daily Mail site to read the full article on the Times, you saw an interesting story you can link to about VMI.
Another institution about to go blackity-black in your back yard.
That's terrible. Half the officers in my unit went to VMI. That's going to be suicide for that school.

Which, in the end, is for the best.
Die, MFers, Die.
It must be really miserable to work in the NYT lol. A bunch of snowflakes crying and whining every two seconds.
Snowflakes melting down in their cubicles. Love it! [❄] [❄] [❄] [💧] [💧] [💦]🌊
Ann, this is an excellent companion piece to your comments with Mickey Kaus yesterday about those craven conservatives at Fox News.
“The fervent internal pressure, accompanied by a hostile national climate, forced the Times opinion page editor Bennet to publicly resign.”
That “hostile national climate” was the Upper West Side, Park Slope and Williamsburg.
Fox News is not the only organization with a management that quakes in fear of offending the crazies in its audience.

After reading this post, I am changing my pen name to 'Sheesh McCreesh.'
