When my mother was an academic dean at Harvard in the 90’s she attended a faculty meeting where the great minds were debating how much to spend to add a curriculum in Urdu to the foreign languages department. The proponents argued that half a billion people speak Urdu. My mother commented: “Isn’t that enough?” The measure was dropped.
